10 Questions

1) What was it that pushed you to start your own company?
I've got to say that it was a trip to Italy and Greece that inspired me and then my older sister Grace who ultimately pushed me. I've always had that word "entrepreneur" stuck in my mind since the age of 12. But it wasn't until all the elements aligned - inspiration, experience, belief in myself - that it all came together.

2) What is the greatest satisfaction you get from being your own boss?
Setting my own schedule and knowing that only I can push myself to the next step. This, coincidentally, is also the scariest thing. To be in charge of your own destiny, to know that it's only you who's going to keep pushing your company forward is both the most exciting and frightening thing I wake up to every day.

3) What is the most important thing you have learned working for ABC and MTV?( In relations to starting your own company)
I learned that the entertainment business is just that, a business. There's a whole machine at work behind-the-scenes that people often forget about. It's easy to get lost in the glitz and glam but when it comes down to it, you have to put in your time and effort if you want to succeed in it. Working on the advertising side, I've had the rare opportunity of working the Emmy's and the MTV award shows standing side by side by everyone from Oprah to Beyonce. You learn that, in the end, people are people and that it's a strange combination of luck, perseverance and hard work that gets you somewhere.

4) How do you distinguish between a trend and a fad?
A trend is something that becomes quickly popular and then fades away. A trend is something that takes some time to build and often stays popular for a longer period of time. I'm interested in fads but I'm fascinated by trends. I love seeing popularity build around something meaningful or long lasting and being one of the first people to have believed in it.

5). Where do trends come from and what about a particular trend substantiates mass-appeal?
To me, trends start from a great or interesting product. It's something that gives people an experience - that makes them want to tell all their friends. The Apple iphone is one of those products that gathered a lot of media attention and substatiated mass-appeal. This was mostly due to the fact that it was a fantastic, ground breaking product that no one had experienced before. I love my first gen iphone but even though it cost an arm and a leg when it came out.

6) What is the biggest trend right now amongst modern enthusiast?
Interesting question. I would say it's social networking. I saw the rise of Friendster, MySpace, Facebook and Twitter and like a lot of people I spend a lot of time on those sites. Modern enthusiasts see these platforms as a new way of connecting and communicating that's here to stay. Maybe it won't be called Facebook or Twitter but social networking is a trend that isn't going anywhere.

7) Which countries have the trendiest modern enthusiast?
I'd probably say Japan and Korea. It's built into their culture. America's slower to adopt new trends but we're definitely near the top of the list.

8) What is your favorite blog post on My Modern Metropolis?
Disney Star Wars Weekend Posters are Awesome! would be my favorite blog post. It's also one of our most popular, making the front page of Reddit. It symbolizes the essence of what the Met is about - events, design, photography. It's informative but gives people an experience when they look at it.

9) Does the Korean American community have the potential to substantiate its own trends? And if so, what kind of trend would be prevalent?
Definitely. The Korean American community has already created huge trends. Take a look at PinkBerry or the Kogi truck - they're run by Koreans. Korean Americans have always instilled the value of hard work in their children and you're beginning to see it in the businesses being created today.

10) What is your favorite Korean food?
Daeng jang jigae. It's a fermented soybean broth that's strong smelling but it reminds me of my grandmother who used to make it for me all the time.
